A lawyer has filed a lawsuit in federal court to collect 25 percent in attorney's fees against the heirs of an estate that received $1.3 million out of a $4.7 million land settlement paid by the government to another estate.Attorney Jay H. Sorensen sued Carmen O. Kaipat, Margarita K. Kosam, Angelina Maureen K. Hamo, Estella K. Hamo, Charles Hartman, Angelina M. Iginoef, Hilario B. Kaipat, and Rosita Romana Songao-Quitugua.The defendants are all descendants of Benigno M. Kaipat, who died on Aug. 30, 1925, without a will. They were sued for breach of contract and violation of attorney's lien rights.Sorensen, who is now based in Michigan, asked the U.S. District Court for the NMI to pay him damages, interests, and court costs.In his complaint filed Tuesday, Sorensen said that on Oct. 23, 1990, he entered into an attorney-client fee contract with certain persons, including defendant Kosam.Under the contract, the lawyer agreed to provide legal services and to represent the heirs of Benigno Kaipat in a legal controversy whether they were entitled to any ownership interest in certain real property on Saipan.The real property, including a lot in Chalan Laulau, was vested in the name of Rita Kaipat, sister of Benigno Kaipat.Sorensen said Kosam entered into a contract on behalf of the heirs of Angelina W.
