Lawyers for one of the largest online gambling companies in the world, BetOnSports, are supposed to be in federal court in St. Louis this afternoon to answer mail and wire fraud charges and the allegation that the company has illegally accepted billions from U.S. residents. One possibility being discussed in the gambling industry is whether they will ever bother to show up. Lawyers did not show up for a status conference in the case last week. BetOnSports spokesman Keith Smith said Friday that the company, which has its headquarters overseas, had not yet been served with legal papers. But an industry insider who said his job was at risk if he publicly identified himself said that executives at BetOnSports have discussed ignoring federal prosecutors' biggest effort in years to shut down offshore gambling and sports betting.
