Has former WJOB radio talk show host Steve Fowler sold his soul (as much of one as journalists have) to the evil cabal of Bob Cantrell and Tom Philpot?Well, I don't know about that but I do know the veteran newsman is now working in the probate division of the Hammond office of Lake County Clerk Philpot, hired on June 20 at an annual salary of $20,000, plus the county benefits. That's raised a few eyebrows, as Fowler knew it would, but after WJOB went to its present all-boring format, it no longer had a place for a guy who wanted to talk Lake County politics and Fowler was among those shown the door in January.Under ideal circumstances, he might have been wise to steer clear of Philpot's office, where East Chicago political fixer Cantrell has claimed responsibility for the election of the clerk and the clerk has certainly never denied it.But when you're drowning in unemployment, even a life preserver from the Titanic looks inviting and when a friend mentioned the opening in the clerk's office, Fowler applied and got the job."I don't intend to write about the clerk's office," he told me Tuesday, as he still does a column for the weekly Calumet Press shopper paper.
