TOLEDO -- The Cumberland County Board increased the salary of Public Defender John Cutright by almost 200 percent even though Cutright faces possible disbarment for his alleged involvement with a corrupt former judge. However, county officials said the pay raise is for the "position" itself, not the person holding the office of public defender. "If he's convicted of some of these accusations, (Cutright) may not be there long," said Robert Swearingen, the county board member who moved to approve the salary increase.During a special meeting at the end of June, the Cumberland County Board followed the recommendation of State's Attorney Barry Schaefer to adjust the public defender pay scale to reflect the willingness of the Illinois General Assembly to fund two-thirds of public defenders' salaries statewide. The move will not mean any additional expense for Cumberland County, according to Schaefer.Cutright's annual salary goes up from about $27,000 to about $75,000, including benefits."But it's the position that got funded, not John per say," said Schaefer.
