A Scottish Euro MP accused of expenses fraud has been cleared after a two-year investigation into his finances. Auditors have found "no justification" for claims that David Martin pocketed allowances he was not entitled to. However, the report is unlikely to be published because it contains the Labour MEP’s personal bank details. The saga began in 2004, when Martin’s then brother-in-law Billy Cook gave documents to the Labour Party alleging allowances irregularities. Cook’s dossier, handed over during his sister Margaret’s bitter divorce battle with Martin, alleged the MEP had misclaimed thousands of pounds in expenses. The row blew up during Labour’s European election campaign and the documents were passed to officials in Brussels. The European parliament asked auditors Deloitte & Touche to investigate.
