Rape is probably the only crime whose trial is as painful as the crime itself for the victim. The long trials, uncomfortable questions put by lawyers and low rate of conviction- the list is endless for the victim who undergoes pain and humiliation at all levels in her attempt to find justice. Therefore, the proposed changes in Criminal Procedure Code that emphasise on trial by women judges only would bring much needed relief to the victim. The Union Cabinet, on the basis of the recommendations of the Law Commission in its 154th, 177th and 178th reports, has given its nod for the introduction of a Bill in Parliament to amend the CrPC, 1973. The trial by women judges, though, seen by some as a gender bias move, will help the rape victim feel comfortable while answering the humiliating and often uncomfortable questions considered important for the case.
