Contamination at a former heating-oil distributor on Delsea Drive is extensive but did not pose a threat to children who attended a day-care center there, an attorney for the property's owner said Monday. Charles Nevins operated McCandless Petroleum Inc. on Delsea Drive in the late 1980s. He extensively tested the office building, land, and a well after learning that the Through the Years day-care center had begun operating at a church that leased the building, attorney Mitchell Kizner said. "It's widespread, but testing in 2003 showed contamination was not in the building or along the perimeter," Kizner said, adding that the contamination predated Nevins' ownership. An outdoor play area the children used was not contaminated and was fenced off, he added. State and federal environmental officials were unable to confirm Kizner's statements Monday.
