The split in a probate court fight over a $28,000 diamond engagement ring sparked a vitriolic exchange Thursday, but the case, nevertheless, reached a conclusion — the ring goes to the estate. Dentist Hulan Yarbrough and former Bexar County Court-at-Law Judge Shay Gebhardt were very different people who had an on-and-off relationship until Gebhardt's death in December. They also had different sets of friends, and whether the two were engaged at the time of Gebhardt's death — the central question in the case — depended upon which friend took the witness stand. At one point, a witness for Yarbrough traded insults with the estate's executor, prompting county Probate Judge Tom Rickhoff to joke that it usually wasn't "the ladies" who forced him to summon the bailiff.
