Foreign workers, including those working in Grande Prairie, could be given more rights and allowed to stay longer in Canada if the federal government adopts recommendations made by a group of immigration lawyers. The federal Human Resources and Social Development department is now reviewing the pilot program that allows companies to import low-skilled foreign workers. In Grande Prairie several companies currently use the program to hire workers from places such as Mexico and south Asia for a variety of jobs such as restaurant and hospitality work. But it's a program with strict conditions that force the workers to leave Canada after 12 months and they're not allowed to apply for citizenship while here or bring their families with them. Now the Canadian Bar Association is hoping to change that.
