ATLANTA - Days before he must report to prison to serve a 2 1/2 year sentence for tax evasion, former Mayor Bill Campbell has asked a federal appeals court to grant him bond while he fights his conviction. A lower court judge has already rejected the request. In papers filed Tuesday with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Campbell's lawyers raised many of the same issues they have before. Those included their belief that Campbell is no risk of flight and that there are substantial issues that could result in a new trial or his sentence being reduced. "Despite previously granting bond pending appeal to at least one similarly situated defendant, the district court refused to allow Campbell to remain free while he pursued his right to appeal in this court," the lawyers wrote.
