WEST PALM BEACH - Lawyers say tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams gave inconsistent testimony in a breach-of-lawsuit contract out of West Palm Beach. The attorneys say their father's income tax filings show the Williams sisters paid him nearly two (m) million dollars in "management fees" from 1998 to 2000. The sisters said in sworn statements that their father was merely a coach and mentor and did not manage them professionally. Promoters Carol Clarke and Keith Rhodes allege in the lawsuit that Richard Williams committed his daughters to play in a 2001 "Battle of the Sexes" match and that they reneged on the deal. But the Williams sisters said he could not make such a commitment. They say their actual manager was the sports marketing giant I-M-G, which never agreed to the deal.
