Amid efforts by the Senate to build strong grounds in convincing the United States (US) government to junk the asylum bid of detained former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn Joc-Joc Bolante, the upper chamber has also been discreetly providing support in putting up a good defense to a group of private Filipino lawyers wanting to outwit Bolantes purported ploy to evade facing charges in the country. Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr., for the first time, revealed information regarding the opposition filed by legal practitioners from the University of the Philippines (UP) Law Center to Bolantes application for political asylum before the US government. The senator had also insinuated to the US government, in convincing concerned authorities to frustrate the former officials plea for asylum, the impact of Bolantes case on the ongoing impeachment proceedings against President Arroyo, whom he noted was found by the Senate committee to be accountable as well in the alleged fertilizer fund scam purported to have been perpetrated by Bolante.
