Tax notices lead to some confusion
2006-08-12
The recent batch of delinquent tax notices sent out by Luzerne County has led to confusion and concern among some residents due to a lack of information contained in the notices, a local tax collector said. The bills, most of which were mailed Saturday, contain only the amount that the property would be sold for if back taxes are not paid and do not list the type of tax or the year for which it is owed, said Hanover Township Tax Collector Mildred Luba. That's made it more difficult for residents to determine if the tax was paid. Luba said she's seen an increase in the number of people who said they were wrongly sent the notices for taxes that were paid. In two cases, she said, the tax notices contained the wrong property identification number. Patricia Klimash, owner of the Lawyers Land Abstract and Centurion Abstract companies, said she's also received multiple calls from customers who are seeking help in proving their taxes were paid.
