Surrounded by his wife, five children and a host of public defenders, prosecutors, judges, law enforcement and probation officers, 6th Judicial District Judge Shaun Floerke announced a "candidacy for my job" on Monday. Floerke, 41, was appointed judge by Gov. Tim Pawlenty on June 30, 2004. He now must run for a six-year term. The man who earned his law degree magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota in 1992 had worked in the St. Louis County Attorney's office in Duluth since 1997 when appointed judge. Floerke held the hand of his 2-year-old daughter, Mercedes, in front of the St. Louis County Courthouse as he vowed to listen to all those who appear before him and to treat them with respect and dignity, as he said he has done since taking his seat on the bench.
