In the summer of 1972, the United States Supreme Court abolished the death penalty and in doing so, it emptied Texas' Death Row and death rows in 30 other states. In her new book, Back From the Dead: One woman's search for the men who walked off America's death row, author Joan M. Cheever, writes of her travels across America in search of the men who "won" America's Death Row "lottery" in 1972, when death rows closed and electric chairs were unplugged. .
