Defense lawyers for former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht filed a motion yesterday asking that any evidence regarding the treatment of corpses he's accused of trading with Carlow University be excluded from his criminal trial. That motion was one of 14 filed by the defense in Dr. Wecht's criminal case -- scheduled for trial in October. The U.S. attorney's office claims that Dr. Wecht improperly provided unclaimed bodies from the coroner's office to Carlow for teaching purposes in exchange for lab space at the school. Defense attorney Mark Rush said in a supporting brief that any such evidence is simply designed to inflame the jury. "Evidence regarding the treatment of corpses is completely irrelevant to the issues in this case," he wrote. Mr. Rush filed 13 other such motions yesterday seeking to exclude all kinds of evidence the government plans to use against Dr.
