Hundreds of expunged criminal cases are active in Dallas County's new computer system that went online 18 months ago, and officials say there is no easy way to find and delete them. The records in the Adult Information System should have been permanently destroyed by court order. Instead, they are subjecting Dallas County to potential liability and creating headaches for officials trying to fix the problem. The county public defender's office and other non-law-enforcement employees have had their access to the system blocked while the problem is being fixed. The problem also could affect those seeking certain jobs, credit and passports. Knowingly disclosing or failing to destroy expunged information is a Class B misdemeanor. A spokeswoman for Atos Origin – to whom the county gave a five-year, $53 million contract to handle the mainframe – said the company had no comment.
