A FREE trade agreement (FTA) with Australia may be signed this year if negotiations focus on doables, Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz said in Adelaide yesterday. The International Trade and Industry Minister told me this after delivering a strong selling message on Malaysias attractions as an investment and tourist destination to more than 300 South Australian business leaders. The Adelaide seminar followed a similarly well-attended presentation to business leaders in Melbourne on Tuesday. Rafidah, who will co-chair today's annual Joint Ministerial Meeting with Australian counterpart and Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile, will likely seek his support for negotiators of the bilateral FTA to downplay emphasis on the professional services sector. Australias negotiators are indicating that they would like a WTO-plus agreement in terms of services.
