GOLD BEACH ? Lawrence M. Juday II, the California man charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend during an argument at a Winchuck River home, has a new lawyer. Portland attorney Pat Birmingham appeared in Curry County District Court with Juday on Wednesday and waived arraignment on a grand jury indictment on behalf of his client. The grand jury earlier indicted the Lancaster, Calif., man with murder and first-degree manslaughter for allegedly shooting and killing Mark Fredrick Pucci on Aug. 29. Curry County Circuit Court Judge Richard Mickelson told Birmingham that the next court date for Juday would be Oct. 13. "I don't expect a plea by that date," Mickelson said. "I just want to know we're making progress." Birmingham was in court with Brookings attorney Bruce Nishioka, who had handled earlier appearances by Juday.
