HOBART law firm PWB Lawyers is downsizing as it continues to feel the fallout from the collapse of its mortgage scheme. Managing partner David Smith said yesterday the firm was too big for two partners to manage. The firm, which used to be known as Piggott Wood and Baker, had been run by five partners but three quit in 2004. The three had been caught up in bankruptcy action over the recovery of money relating to the mortgage scheme. Mr Smith said the firm was "downsizing" its litigation department. "We're not sacking, we're just restructuring the firm," he said. Mr Smith said arrangements were being made to move a number of the litigation files and lawyers to other law firms. "We're trying to find them alternative positions," he said. Mr Smith said he and the other partner in the firm, Ros Courtney, were family law specialists and wanted to focus on what they did best.
