LANSING -- Fundraising for the Michigan governor's race continues to smash records, new state finance reports filed Thursday show, as the two candidates collected a combined $33.5 million and spent more than $25 million through August. And the two costliest months of the campaign have yet to play out. Republican nominee, wealthy west Michigan businessman Dick DeVos, reached into his own pockets for $16.1 million of the $21.6 million raised by his campaign. Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, began September with $7.3 million in the bank, compared to just less than $600,000 for DeVos. But nothing precludes him from dipping into his personal fortune to continue his TV ad blitz that has shown no sign of letup since its February launch. "It's a ton of money," said Rich Robinson, who heads the Michigan Campaign Finance Network watchdog group.
