Million dollar lawyers and limited regulation of fees has led to thousands, including the embattled head of the judiciary, Chief Justice Sat Sharma, having to appeal to Government for assistance in coping with the high cost of justice in Trinidad and Tobago. As this Sunday Newsday investigation reveals, there is no regulation of fees for criminal lawyers by the Law Associations Disciplinary Committee and the fee schedule for civil cases is reportedly breached on a regular basis. The mandate of the Disciplinary Committee states that it exists to, regulate all attorneys, consider complaints about them and, where appropriate, take action against them. However the Committee does not address lawyers overcharging of clients. Committee Chairman, Hendrickson Siewnath SC, declared, You can charge anything you want, it is up to the client and his willingness to pay.
