D.A. adds criminal case to fraternity hazing suit
2006-09-03
The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has approved a criminal complaint in a case against two University of Pennsylvania students accused of participating in a fraternity hazing incident at the school last October. Kelechi Okereke, a senior, is charged with harassment and Lionel Anderson-Perez, a graduate student, is charged with simple assault in the incident in which a student alleges he was left scarred and bruised, according to the District Attorney's Office. Student E. Martyn Griffen of Arkansas, who previously filed a civil suit in the case, claims that he was "repeatedly and violently punched in the thighs" and that a rubber band was placed on his upper arm and "snapped repeatedly" by Okereke and Anderson-Perez until a cut formed that "caused a serious and permanent scar." Griffen was pledging the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
