DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Vatican said Thursday that it accepted the retirement of Bishop William Franklin, the head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport and just the fourth American bishop to send a diocese into bankruptcy court.At the same time, Pope Benedict XVI named Martin J. Amos, an auxiliary bishop in Cleveland, to succeed Franklin and take over a diocese facing financial turmoil and a persistent sex abuse scandal involving clergy.Amos, who entered the priesthood in 1968, acknowledged the challenge ahead but said he hopes to lead like a "loving father, gentle shepherd and wise teacher.""Bishop Franklin has discussed with me the serious issues facing the diocese," Amos said during a brief news conference at Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Davenport. ....
