But last night the reclusive owner of Chelsea Football Club made a terse statement about his marriage after it was reported that his wife Irina had been speaking to divorce lawyers. The prospect of the Abramoviches splitting up raised the possibility of Britains costliest divorce, with Mr Abramovich facing a £5billion-plus payout if his £11billion oil fortune were split 50-50. But, speaking through a trusted friend, Abramovich strongly denied that he and his wife were heading for the courts.
