If Judge Feels Like a Hooker, I Feel Like Paying: Ann Woolner

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- As a party to a lawsuit in which right is completely on my side, I have nonetheless spent far more in legal fees than I ever imagined I would. Or could. I do it hoping my lawyer can convince the judge of the (obvious) correctness of my cause. I sometimes think it would be more direct to simply give the money to the judge. Ah, but that would be wrong. And yet, the more I read about state judicial races, the more I wonder why I shouldn't join the crowd. Interest groups and lawyers are throwing millions of dollars at judicial campaigns this year, especially in the appellate races. To them, having a case before a judge is no reason to hold back. In fact, it seems to encourage generosity. In Ohio, it isn't unusual for a company's political action committee -- or lawyers for the people suing the company, for that matter -- to contribute thousands of dollars to state Supreme Court campaigns at the very moment that the court is pondering their high-stakes lawsuits, according to a New York Times report earlier this month....
