A SPORT-loving former Carlisle businessman has become the latest victim of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma. Non-smoker William Smith, who ran his own joinery business from his home near Carlisle, swam every day and played golf regularly. But his life changed completely after he was diagnosed with the killer lung disease mesothelioma late last year and given just months to live. The 69-year-old lost a stone in weight, became breathless after walking a short distance and was forced to use oxygen and take morphine-based painkillers. North east Cumbria coroner David Osborne this week recorded a verdict that Mr Smith, who died in April, had been killed by the industrial disease mesothelioma – now officially Britain's biggest workplace killer.
